New Year Prize Questionnaire | 100+ Events, 25 Books — Have You Learned to Eat Well?

● In 2022, 50+ guests took part in our events (not all shown here).

Happy New Year, dear readers!

Over the past five years, delving into topics both deep and broad in the field of food and agriculture, Foodthink has published 486 original articles. Our content has crossed urban–rural boundaries and broken down disciplinary barriers, covering nearly 20 subject areas including food and agriculture policy, rural development, organic agriculture, co-operative economy, food safety, nutrition and health, and food culture.

We have also organised more than 60 sharing sessions and over 70 reading group discussions, as well as film screenings, workshops, courses and farmers’ gatherings. Altogether, we have read through 25 books together and connected with more than 100 guests. We strive to seek out frontline producers practising ecological agriculture, academic researchers in relevant fields, members of public-interest and social organisations, and ordinary consumers… who share discoveries and stories from the fields, study books and materials together, or follow the latest research and records.

● In March 2022, veteran rural community worker Huang Yajun shared, at Sanyuanqiao Ji Shi in Beijing, his observations of rural communities across several southern provinces over the years, and the challenges facing rural development.
● In June 2022, together with numerous “Friends of Nature”, we read Changjiaoling and Wenzizi’s new book, Earthy, Not Unfashionable.
● Covers of all books read by the Foodthink Reading Group as of the end of 2022.

Our online community brings together participants from all our past events. Alongside our lively discussions, we share food from different places and encourage one another, and when we are fortunate enough to meet in person, we work the fields together, cook together, and exchange seeds and books.

In 2022, for reasons well known to all, opportunities to hold in-person events were truly limited, and most of Foodthink’s activities shifted online. In addition to Tencent Meeting, we added livestreams on WeChat Channels, making it easier for everyone to book ahead or simply click to watch. All events were also recorded and uploaded to Foodthink’s Bilibili account, so that anyone can catch up at their convenience.

For each event, we devote a great deal of time to advance preparation, doing our best in areas such as book selection, topic planning, and inviting guests. That said, while our resources, time and energy are finite, we have also yet to collect feedback from our participants.

If you have attended our events, we hope you can spare a little time to fill in the questionnaire below, helping us improve and enhance the quality and experience of our activities.

We will also select the 5 most constructive questionnaire responses and offer a small gift — a set of Douban Nature Series tableware.

In the new year, let’s continue to eat well! You’re welcome to join the Beijing Harvest Festival series, currently taking place across the New Year, to kick off 2023!

About the Beijing Harvest Festival

In 2022, we hoped to bring together more partners in Beijing to co-create the Beijing Harvest Festival across disciplines and boundaries, showcasing the beauty of diversity in everyday life, production and the living world — from food grown through different cultivation methods, to the rich array of heirloom crop varieties and the stories behind them, to the many ways people choose to live…

Although a variety of reasons have prevented this year’s in-person events from going ahead, we will be working with multiple partners and organisations to run a series of online events centred on diversity and sustainable living, from 22 December to 15 January.

We welcome you to follow Foodthink’s WeChat Official Account for the latest event updates! We hope the Harvest Festival can bring together people who carry “diversity” within them — that they might meet here, connect, and one day, at some future moment, act together.
