New Year Prize Survey | 100+ Events, 25 Books: Have You Learned to Eat Well?

● In 2022, 50+ guests took part in our events (not all are pictured).

Dear readers, Happy New Year!

Over the past five years, exploring food and agriculture at varying levels of depth, Foodthink has published 486 original articles. Bridging the urban–rural divide and crossing disciplinary boundaries, our content covers nearly 20 themes, including food and agricultural policy, rural development, organic farming, cooperative economics, food safety, nutritional health, and food culture.

We have also hosted 60+ sharing sessions and 70+ book club discussions, alongside film screenings, workshops, courses, and farmers’ gatherings. Along the way, we have collectively read 25 books and connected with over 100 guests. We have actively sought out frontline ecological farmers, academic researchers in related fields, representatives from charities and community organisations, and everyday consumers—whether to share discoveries and stories from the land, study texts together, or keep pace with the latest research and reporting.

● In March 2022, veteran rural community worker Huang Yajun shared his observations on rural life and the challenges facing rural development at Sanyuanqiao Jishi in Beijing, drawing on his work across communities in several southern provinces over the years.
● In June 2022, we joined numerous ‘Friends of Nature’ members in reading the new book by Changjiaoling and Wenzizi, *Earthy, Yet Not Rustic*.

Our online community brings together participants from past events. Beyond lively discussions, members share regional dishes, offer mutual encouragement, and when circumstances allow us to meet in person, we work the soil together, prepare meals, and exchange seeds and books.

In 2022, due to circumstances widely known at the time, opportunities to host in-person events were genuinely limited. As a result, most of Foodthink’s activities moved online. In addition to Tencent Meeting, we introduced live streaming via WeChat Channels to make it easier for everyone to register and watch directly. All sessions were recorded and uploaded to Foodthink’s Bilibili account for those who wish to revisit them.

Each event demands considerable preparation time, and we strive to give our very best in selecting books, designing discussion topics, and inviting speakers. Yet, while our resources, time, and energy are inevitably limited, we have also yet to gather feedback from those who attend.

If you have attended any of our events, we would be grateful if you could spare a few moments to complete the questionnaire below. Your responses will help us refine and enhance the quality and experience of our future activities.

We will also select five of the most insightful survey responses and reward them with a small gift — a set of tableware from Douban’s Natural series.

In the new year, let’s continue to eat well! Join the ongoing cross-year Beijing Harvest Festival series to kick off 2023!

About the Beijing Harvest Festival

In 2022, we hope to join forces with more partners across Beijing to co-create the Beijing Harvest Festival through cross-disciplinary collaboration. Our aim is to showcase the diverse beauty of daily life, food production, and the natural world—through food grown under various cultivation methods, a rich array of heritage crop varieties and the stories behind them, and a wide spectrum of lifestyle choices…

Although various factors have prevented our in-person events from going ahead this year, we will be collaborating with a range of partners and organisations to host a series of online events from 22 December to 15 January, centring on diversity and sustainable living.

Please follow the Foodthink Official Account for the latest event updates! We hope the “Harvest Festival” will bring together those who embrace diversity, allowing you to meet, connect, and take collective action in the future.
